What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in Tennessee and do I need uninsured motorist coverage?
The minimum limits required by Tennessee law are $25,000 per person bodily injury, $50,000 per accident bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. I highly recommend much higher limits because in today’s time, $25,000 bodily injury doesn’t go far, and how many vehicles are on the road that are valued at more than $25,000. And if you cause an accident, cause damage to someone else, and the court awards anything above that limit that you currently have, then your assets are open to that judgment.
So, although, you comply with the law at the low limits, you do not protect yourself adequately and yes, you do need uninsured motorists because that protects you in the event of an accident with someone who is uninsured, but also on the property damage side! Although you may have comp and collision on your vehicle, the deductible on the uninsured motorist is $200. And also if it is paid as an uninsured motorists claim, it does not count against you as an accident – where if it’s paid under your collision, it is counted as an accident.
